The annual ACC Legislative Conference brings together ACC members from across the country to advocate for cardiovascular professionals and their patients. In addition to educational sessions on the hot button issues in health care, ACC members meet directly with legislators to discuss how the decisions they make impact providers and patients. Dr. Mahi Ashwath, Incoming Iowa-ACC President at the time, attended and met with Iowa legislation.
Talking points for our congressional meetings focused on the following themes:
- Exercise careful oversight of issues that contribute to administrative burden and detract from patient care, including utilization management tools such as prior authorization.
- Promote the transition from volume to value by eliminating barriers to participating in alternative payment models and implementing innovative care coordination practices.
- Increase patient access to cardiac rehabilitation services by building upon past legislation, specifically the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018, which included provisions to allow physician assistants, nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists to supervise cardiac, intensive cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs, beginning in 2024.
- Transform cardiovascular care and improve heart health through targeted research programs and legislation to combat the youth tobacco epidemic.
Save the date for the 2020 Legislative Conference, taking place from October 4-6 in Washington, DC!
